Our Work With the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) 

ATSA engages with the TGA to provide practical, evidence-informed input on regulatory settings that affect the provision of assistive technology in Australia. We advocate for a regulatory environment that protects assistive technology users while also supporting a viable, skilled and sustainable assistive technology sector.  

Our Engagement with the TGA  

Through our role with the Regulatory and Technical Consultative Forum for Medical Devices (RegTech Forum), we aim to: 

  • share practical sector insights about assistive technology supply, servicing and support 
  • highlight emerging regulatory issues affecting assistive technology products and businesses 
  • contribute to discussions on how regulation interacts with innovation, product development and market access 
  • support approaches that improve compliance clarity while maintaining strong consumer protections 

 Our Current TGA-related Priorities  

  1. Supporting fit-for-purpose regulation that protects access and choice 

Assistive technology includes a wide range of products, from low-risk everyday items through to complex and highly customised equipment. ATSA advocates for regulatory approaches that reflect this diversity, protect assistive technology users, and avoid unintended barriers to access, innovation, product availability and supply. 

  1. Reducing regulatory confusion and improving guidance for the sector

ATSA supports the development of clearer guidance and practical communication that helps assistive technology distributors and manufacturers understand how TGA requirements apply in real-world contexts. 

Share Your Insights and Feedback 

We are particularly interested in feedback about: 

  • regulatory settings that may be creating barriers to timely access to assistive technology 
  • compliance challenges experienced by suppliers, importers, manufacturers or service providers 
  • areas where guidance is unclear or difficult to apply in practice 
  • unintended consequences of regulatory approaches for consumers or the sector 
  • opportunities to improve safety and quality while supporting access and innovation
